Super simple and wholesome marinara sauce

So this is actually one of my first savoury recipes on this blog, this is mostly because when I cook something for dinner I end up already eating it before I can take any pictures of it… I have to say I am a little bit impatient, especially when I am hungry I make poor decisions. But hey this wonderful super simple and wholesome marinara sauce using fresh basil made it through! It also helps that I’ve got 2 big basil plants in my garden right now that has too much basil to use up for me. I guess another recipe for a nice pesto is coming up soon too…

This sauce is just amazing on a simple pasta, with some meatballs or on your homemade pizza! The sauce is just so versatile, you can use it for almost anything. I like this sauce to be not blended and just be a little bit chunky to add some rusticness to a dish. Of course you can also blend it, everyone has its own preference. Well let’s make this beautiful sauce and enjoy it, shall we.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 red onion, grated
  • 2 cans of peeled tomatoes
  • 6 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp italian herbs/dried oregano (I use a mix of dried oregano, basil and thyme)
  • 1/2 tsp freshly gound pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red chili flakes
  • handful of basil leaves roughly chopped

Method

  • Heat a large pot with the olive oil on medium heat and saute the onion for 5 minutes until translucient. Add in the garlic and saute for 2 more minutes. Add in the balsamic vinegar and give it a good stir, let cook for 2 more minutes.
  • Now add in the remaining ingredients: the cans of tomatoes with the juices, tomato paste, salt, pepper, chili flakes, italian herbs and the roughly chopped basil. Gently break up the whole tomatoes with a wooden spoon or spatula.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and let simmer for 30 minutes up to an hour, depending on how thick you want the sauce to be.
  • Taste and season with salt and pepper to your taste. You can also puree it into a smoother sauce with an immersion blender, but I prefer a more rustic sauce. Enjoy with your favorite pasta, on top of your pizza or with some meatballs!
